EATWELL SMALL BITES / WEEK 3

Our health is influenced by a variety of factors

This week, let's talk about different things that affect our health. When we think about our health, we might think about going to the doctor's office or hospital. Medical care is very important for our health. But we also know that many things that keep us healthy happen outside of doctors' offices, like what we eat, how clean our air is, or where we live. First, let's talk about why good healthcare matters, and then we'll talk about how our health is affected by where we live.

Health and Healthcare

A good first step to getting good healthcare is finding a doctor who gives you helpful, caring treatment. Tips for finding the right doctor for you:

  • Ask about their experience with patients who have weight issues and diabetes, and how they talk about weight, medicines, and health.

  • It's okay to politely tell healthcare workers when they say something mean or unfair about you or your weight.

  • Talk about your health goals and what matters to you, instead of just focusing on losing weight, and ask for help reaching these goals.

Having healthcare you can afford and easily get to, with a doctor you trust, can really make you healthier. But even when we have good healthcare, other things in our life can affect how healthy we feel.

Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor questions! If you need more information on anything, from a diagnosis to lab results, just ask.
