Eat Well

Eat Well offers up to $210 per month for fruits and vegetables to eligible Medicaid members in select North Carolina counties.

An Eat Well employee will contact you to share information about the program. We will confirm your address and date of birth over the phone.

You will receive a prepaid debit card in the mail from Eat Well. The card takes about 10-20 days to arrive in the mail. When you receive the card, activate the card by following the instructions in the welcome packet. You can activate the card by phone or in the app.

Once the card is activated, you will have access to $210 per month for the duration of your prescription. Your card can only be used to purchase fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables with no added salts, sugars or fats.

Participating Eat Well retailers include Food Lion, Wal-Mart, and Dollar General. Only fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables can be purchased.

  • Participants receive up to $210/mo to purchase fruits and vegetables for as long as they are eligible.

  • Funds are restricted to the purchase of fruits and vegetables.

  • Participants spend their funds at participating retailers.

  • Participants can choose their own fruits and vegetables to purchase.

  • Participants can spend their funds over multiple trips to the grocery store.

Who is eligible for Eat Well?

Must be a Medicaid managed care member enrolled in Standard Plan or enrolled in I/DD Tailored Plan.

  • Must live in pilot region.

  • Must have at least one physical or behavioral health criteria:

    • Adults with two or more qualifying chronic conditions.

    • Pregnant women with high risk of complications.

    • Child under 3 years old who graduated from neonatal intensive care unit.

    • Child under 20 years old experiencing three or more categories of adverse childhood experiences.

  • In addition to one physical or behavioral health criteria, must have one social risk factor:

    • Unhoused and/or housing insecure

    • Food insecure

    • Transportation insecure

    • At risk of, witnessing, or experiencing interpersonal violence


Where can I shop?

Eat Well funds can be redeemed at Food Lion, Wal-Mart, Dollar General, Walgreens, and CVS.


What can I buy?

Eligible items include fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables without added salt, sugar, or fat. The frozen and canned items with the blue WIC label are eligible.


Do the funds roll over from month to month?

Unused Eat Well funds do not roll over from month to month. 


How long does the program last?

You will receive Eat Well funds for as long as your prescription indicates.
